The man laughs to himself, which is a little weird, but whatever. “Hey, no need to be disrespectful.” Simon’s tone is teasing, and it reminds Techno enough of Phil that he stops being so annoyed at the interruption to his day. It’s useful to have the man’s name, but he would still prefer he drop any pretenses in favor of being straightforward. Techno rolls his eyes a bit in lieu of a verbal response. “How about we start over? Hi, my name’s Simon. The man tugs down his scarf so that Techno can see his face properly. Phil has taught him a few things about the structure of worlds, and the near-omniscient nature of admins had been his least favorite part. Techno is mollified by this response only because he knows the man isn’t lying. “I’m an admin, you see, so I can just tell by looking at you.” I’m not stalking you or anything,” he adds hastily when Techno raises his sword. “Hey now,” the stranger raises his hands in a placating motion. Something to do with his technique he might answer, but his background and personal life is a tightly kept secret. Techno glares, disliking the personal nature of these questions. “But you haven’t been here for three years, have you?” The man doesn’t have the audacity to pretend he is ignorant of Techno’s identity and reputation. Skips all the awkward introductions and small talk. “How long have you been on Hypixel, Technoblade?” It’s a good opener. If this man wants to talk, he’ll have to start a conversation himself. Techno ignores him in favor of polishing his sword. After his performance in the arena today, no one would be stupid enough to attack him while he’s holding a weapon. Techno is wary but not particularly concerned. He’s busy cleaning blood off his sword when a stranger in dark clothing approaches the winner’s stand. Most people would agree that a ten-year-old should not participate in blood sports, but considering how thoroughly he had trounced the competition, the admins seem willing to make an exception. Technoblade wins his first tournament on a Saturday. He doesn’t understand why, but Simon’s words stick in his head for a long time. Techno waves in something like affirmation as he walks away. Techno grunts and turns away, curiosity sated. The smile grows and parts as Simon laughs. “Who is us? Some sort of elite admin club?” “Ah,” Simon tugs down his mask and smiles. “If you had won, what did you want?” Techno repeats. “Pardon?” Simon asks, either confused or doing an excellent job of faking it. Techno, burned out on social interaction, is happy to take his winnings and leave, but a small yet insistent voice in the back of his mind makes him turn back. The duel is supposed to be best two out of three, but they end up clashing seven times before Simon surrenders. That’s the price he pays for being the best: mediocre competition. It’s not much of a challenge-most aren’t, these days. Technoblade wins his 347th duel on a Tuesday.
